About the Markdown Previewer

Markdown is quick to write, but a stray asterisk or missing blank line only shows up once it is rendered. This previewer turns the core Markdown syntax into formatted HTML next to your text, so you can check headings, emphasis, lists, links and code blocks before you paste them into a README, issue, forum or documentation page.

What you can do

  • Render headings from # to ######, bold, italic and inline code.
  • Show bulleted lists with - or *, numbered lists, blockquotes and fenced code blocks.
  • Turn [text](url) into links that open in a new tab.
  • See the preview beside the Markdown as you edit.

When it works best

  • Checking a README or changelog entry before pushing it.
  • Drafting a long GitHub issue or pull request description away from the browser tab.
  • Learning Markdown by seeing what each piece of syntax produces.

Things to know

  • Rendering is done in your browser. Raw HTML is shown as text, and links are limited to http, https, mailto and relative addresses, which keeps the preview safe.
  • Only core syntax is supported: tables, images, task lists, nested lists and strikethrough are not rendered.
  • Each line becomes its own paragraph, and services like GitHub may render some details differently.
  • To build a table, use the Markdown Table Generator. To turn Markdown into a PDF, use Markdown to PDF.
